Modern Theatre training develops versatility, strength, and expression, and this unit gives you the tools to pass that on effectively. You’ll study the ISTD syllabus in depth while also researching the development of modern theatre dance and its influence today, and why it's so relevant to our young dancers.
More than learning choreography, you’ll practise how to teach it: structuring lessons, correcting technique, and encouraging creativity in your students. This unit will give you both the technical knowledge and the teaching strategies to deliver Modern with understanding, confidence, and excitement!
Tap is rhythm, precision, and performance rolled into one, and this unit gives you the tools to teach it effectively. You’ll study the ISTD Tap syllabus in detail while also diving into musicality, timing, and the technical drills that give tap dancers their sharpness and style. Just as importantly, you’ll learn how to communicate rhythm, build confidence in students who may find tap daunting, and create lessons that feel both accessible and exciting. By the end, you’ll be ready to deliver tap classes
that develop strong foundations, clear technique, and a love for rhythm in every student.
This unit is where your teaching really comes to life. You’ll study the ISTD Imperial Classical Ballet syllabus in depth, while also exploring the artistry, musicality, and discipline that make ballet such a powerful foundation for dance training. The focus isn’t just on “knowing the steps” it’s about learning how to teach them.
You’ll research technique, safe practice, and child development in ballet, while developing the skills to plan lessons, give corrections, and build confidence in your students. By the end, you’ll be able to deliver structured, inspiring ballet classes with clarity, authority, and care, giving your future students the very best start in their training.

"A studio that grows with you"
– Sarah M., Parent of Ava (Age 12)
"We’ve been with iDance for four years, and it’s been an incredible journey. Ava started in Boogie Bugs as a shy 8-year-old who just wanted to have fun. Now, she’s part of the Elite Expressions team and helps choreograph routines. What we love most is how the studio evolves with the dancer. The curriculum grows in complexity, but so does the sense of belonging. It's rare to find a place that balances fun with excellence, but iDance does it with heart."

Ruby - DDE Tap and Modern
''I’ve been attending RDC exclusively online for two years now, and have completed my DDE tap and modern within the last few months.
After dancing my whole life, I loved performing, but I always knew that teaching was my passion. Coming into DDE with some teaching experience and quite a good knowledge of the ISTD syllabus, I knew I needed a college that would be able to take me to a greater depth with my teaching, and with RDC I have got that and more.
I truly believe I have become a better teacher during my time there, because not only do we learn what to teach, most importantly we learn how to teach, and why we teach it. My pupils have benefitted from a more well rounded dance education, and I have come to love teaching even more through the fresh ideas and perspectives I’ve had. Jess brings a level of knowledge to our classes well beyond the basics, and it is a privilege to learn from such intelligent teachers.
Learning on Zoom has allowed me to be flexible whilst completing my academic degree, and has allowed me to access all the content whilst living at the other end of the country! When it came to exam time, I was able to travel to the studio and had amazing support in making sure I was ready.
I have loved my time at RDC and can’t thank them enough for the training I have received. Besides the training, simply being amongst great teachers is enough to inspire you as a teacher. The benefits to both me as a teacher and the pupils I teach are huge. This is the place to be for new teachers!”
The DDE is a nationally recognised, Ofqual-regulated qualification that trains you to become a fully qualified ISTD dance teacher. It’s made up of five units: Safe Dance Practice, Observing & Assisting, your Intermediate exam, Practical Teaching, and Child Development. Together, these units prepare you to teach safely, confidently, and to a professional standard. Unlike a performance diploma, the DDE at RDC is built specifically for teachers, it equips you with the skills to plan lessons, correct students, understand how they learn, and prepare them for ISTD exams. It’s the foundation of a sustainable career in dance education.
No, and in fact, most people don’t. The course is designed to be flexible. You can complete the five units in your own time, usually over 2–5 years, depending on your background and pace. For example, Units 1, 2 and 5 are written and theory-based, while Unit 4 is your big practical teaching exam, and Unit 3 is your Intermediate level performance exam. At RDC, we’ll create a personalised plan so you’re never overwhelmed, you can focus on one or two units at a time and build your confidence as you go.
A degree or performance diploma shows you can dance, but it doesn’t prove you can teach. Increasingly, employers, insurers, and safeguarding bodies are asking for formal teaching qualifications like the DDE. This qualification tells the world you’ve been trained in how to teach, not just perform. It covers safe practice, lesson planning, child development, and how to guide students through exams. It also gives you access to ISTD membership and further qualifications such as Licentiate, Fellowship, or even QTLS if you want to teach in schools or colleges. Simply put, the DDE is the benchmark for professional dance teachers- it sets you apart and gives you the authority to charge more, work internationally, and build a long-term career.
Because every student’s journey is different, there isn’t one flat fee. Your cost depends on your prior experience, how many genres you take, and how quickly you want to move through the units.
At RDC, most students pay between £150–£300 per month, with everything broken into manageable instalments. You’ll also need ISTD syllabus notes (purchased directly).
We’ll be clear and upfront about the full costs from day one, and we’ll build a plan that works for you, whether that’s spreading things out over a few years, or fast-tracking in 12–18 months.
Yes, and we’ve proven it works. All our DDE classes are streamed live on Zoom and recorded so you can catch up if you miss anything. You can ask questions in real time, get corrections, and send in videos for feedback, just like you would in person. We’ve had students complete the entire DDE online and pass their ISTD exams with confidence. The key isn’t geography, it’s having the right support, structure, and feedback, which we make sure you get. Wherever you are in the UK or abroad, you can train fully with us.
Train with us in person at our dedicated teacher training base in Sarisbury Green Parish Rooms, The Green, Sarisbury Green, Southampton, SO31 7AA, or join us online from anywhere in the world. However you choose to study, you’ll receive the same expert mentorship, personalised feedback, and supportive community that makes RDC the place exclusively for dance teachers.
